warp faced indigo ikat: wool, needle point, wire, indigo paint
71" x 16"
Ikat is an ancient technique of forming image by dyeing before interweaving weft with warp, often used to create imagery that was deeply meaningful culturally and spiritually for the purpose of evoking prosperity and good health. This led me to look for a contemporary form of common expression which I found in graffiti. Created in an anonymous act, spontaneously giving voice to emotion, seeks the same timeless theme of hope. This piece is a time capsule recording the collaboration of a multitude of voices, scratching an urban totem with a name or a mark, hoping against hope, to be heard. Home
